Nigeria has been thrown into shock and outrage after a viral video showed armed vigilantes in Anambra State brutally assaulting National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members — young citizens deployed to serve their country under government protection.
In the most chilling moment captured on camera, Jennifer Edema Elohor, a corps member, was stripped naked, beaten to the point of bleeding, and mocked by members of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group (Operation Udo Ga-Achi). Her only “crime” was being accused of internet fraud — an accusation proven false the moment she and her colleagues produced their NYSC identification cards and uniforms.
Yet, the vigilantes ignored all evidence, choosing instead to rain down violence, degradation, and threats of sexual assault on the helpless corps members.
The Haven 360 Foundation, which released the video, described the attack as “a barbaric violation of human rights and an unforgivable assault on the Nigerian state itself.”
“This was not just Jennifer’s humiliation — it was the humiliation of every Nigerian parent who sends a child to serve the nation. If corps members can be stripped, beaten, and left in blood while in NYSC uniform, then the government has failed in its duty to protect them,” the foundation declared.
The incident has sparked furious reactions online, with Nigerians demanding immediate government intervention. Many are asking why a local vigilante group was allowed to usurp state power and terrorize citizens with impunity.
The government now faces mounting pressure to act:
Arrest and prosecute the members of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group involved.
Compensate and rehabilitate the victims.
Guarantee the safety of every corps member currently serving across Nigeria.
For Jennifer and her colleagues, the scars may never heal. But for the government, the question is urgent: if the NYSC cannot protect its own corps members, what does “service to the nation” truly mean?
