Tension is currently brewing at Obioma Estate in Lodu Ahiaeke, Umuahia North LGA of Abia State, as residents—predominantly women—have raised alarm over an imminent attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

According to the women, the problem started when herders allowed their cattle to destroy farmlands in the area, particularly cassava and corn farms belonging to the residents. When the women confronted the herdsmen, the situation reportedly escalated into a heated faceoff.

Eyewitnesses told Abia Radio News that the herdsmen allegedly harassed the women, brandishing cutlasses and issuing threats, forcing the women to flee into their houses for safety.

The herdsmen later moved with their cattle towards another location near the timber market axis, where a fresh clash broke out between them and another group of locals. The confrontation led to several injuries, including one of the herdsmen.

Although the clash did not happen at Obioma Estate, residents say they fear for their lives after hearing reports that the herdsmen vowed to return to their estate for a retaliatory attack.

“We are living in fear. Our children and husbands are afraid to go to farm. We need government and security agencies to come now before lives are lost,” one of the women lamented.
