Three storey building collapses in Umuahia, injures occupants of nearby residence.
An uncompleted three-storey building in umuahia , the Abia State Capital, said to be the property of a former Gubernatorial and Senatorial candidate of political parties in the past has collapsed this Saturday ( 26/7/25), with serious effects on a nearby building.
The structure located at the road two junction low-cost Housing Estate Umuahia, Abia State, which according to eye witness accounts collapsed around three o’clock in the morning has remained at this present stage for about twenty years.
One of the eyewitnesses who is a security man at the premises, Mr Babayu Adamu, revealed that the building showed some negative signs in the past, resulting in some reinforcing measures taken .
Adamu made it clear that recently no sign of collapse on the three-storey building which has been roofed and is awaiting furnishing was observed before the sudden caving in and final collapse this morning.
Occupants of the bungalow which was affected by the building that collapsed Mr Ugwumba Shedrack and Nkechi Uzochi said that the incident happened at about three o’clock in the morning, explaining that the collapsed building belongs to a popular politician.
According to them, two fellow occupants of the affected building including a baby were wounded and were rushed to a private hospital near the area for treatment.
Addressing Newsmen at the site of the collapsed building, the General manager Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), Mr Kingsley Agomoh announced the sealing-off of the premises.
Agomoh, who thanked God for saving the lives of two persons, including a baby, who were the occupants of the bungalow behind the three-storey building who sustained injuries.
He disclosed that the agency has commenced investigations to ascertain the cause of the building collapse, pointing out that the appropriate punishment will be meted out to the owner in line with the law.
Agomoh revealed that an integrity test will be conducted on the two three-storey buildings still standing in the premises.
Evacuation of persons occupying the remaining two three storey buildings in the premises by the Abia State Emergency management Agency, SEMA, officials was ongoing as at the time of filing this report.
