Defections Rock Zamfara As Governor Lawal Heads To Aso Rock
Tension is rising in Zamfara State following a fresh wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), deepening political uncertainty ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to The Nation Governor Dauda Lawal is billed to meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House on Wednesday to discuss the unfolding political developments.
On Tuesday, Hon. Maharazu Salisu, representing Maradun II Constituency in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, formally defected to the APC at the party’s state secretariat in Gusau.
Salisu’s defection, alongside that of several ward leaders, adds to the growing list of PDP chieftains switching allegiance, signalling widening cracks in Governor Lawal’s camp.
The APC already enjoys a majority in the Zamfara Assembly, and sources revealed to the aforementioned platform that more PDP lawmakers are weighing their options ahead of 2027.
Meanwhile, the Northern APC Stakeholders Forum has cautioned against any move to welcome Governor Lawal into the ruling party.
In a statement signed by its national coordinator, Alhaji Mubarak Liman, the forum warned that admitting the governor would destabilise the APC in Zamfara and across the North-West.
“Any attempt to welcome him into the APC will spell doom for the party in Zamfara and the North-West at large,” Liman declared.
The group argued that the spate of defections by lawmakers and grassroots leaders was evidence of the governor’s dwindling popularity in the state.
