A major crack may have just been exposed in the Anambra State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as former Governor and ex-Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige, has openly disassociated himself from the party’s governorship candidate, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, and his running mate, Senator Uche Ekwunife.

In a strongly worded statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Hyggy Obialo, and personally endorsed by him, Ngige warned the APC candidate and his team to “stop campaigning with my name” and immediately desist from using his image in campaign materials.

The statement followed the circulation of an online campaign poster showing Ngige’s photograph alongside Ukachukwu and Ekwunife — a move the former Minister described as unauthorized and misleading.

“Our attention has been drawn to the online poster in circulation… featuring together with the Anambra State APC Governorship candidate, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu and his deputy, Sen. Uche Ekwunife. Neither the consent nor approval of our principal was sought or obtained,” the statement read.

Ngige made it clear that he is on a sabbatical from active partisan politics after 25 years of public service and will not be supporting any candidate in the upcoming election.

The former governor, who is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished politicians in Anambra State, has served as:

Governor of Anambra (2003–2006)

Senator for Anambra Central (2011–2015)

Minister of Labour and Employment (2015–2023)

His sudden public distancing from the APC candidate raises fresh concerns over internal unity in the party, as Ukachukwu faces a fierce battle to wrest power from the ruling party in the state. Political watchers believe Ngige’s withdrawal of association could weaken the APC’s grassroots mobilization in parts of the state where Ngige remains a political force.

This development has fueled speculation of deep-seated divisions among Anambra APC leaders ahead of the governorship polls — divisions that could have major consequences at the ballot box.
