We Haven’t Been Able To End Terrorism, Trump Is Welcome To Help Us – Ik Ogbonna
Nollywood actor Ik Ogbonna has reacted to US President Donald Trump’s threat of military action against terrorist groups operating in Nigeria.
Abia Radio News reports that in a post on his Instagram story, Ogbonna said the debate should not be about who makes the statement but about whether Nigerians truly want terrorism to end.
He said that if Nigeria, as a sovereign nation, has been unable to defeat insurgency after many years, then genuine international support should be welcomed.
The actor condemned the continuous attacks, stressing that while many incidents occur in Christian-dominated areas, terrorism should not be viewed through a religious lens but as a crime against humanity.
Ogbonna called on the Nigerian government to engage in direct discussions with the United States, the United Nations, and neighbouring countries to find lasting solutions to the country’s insecurity.
He added that instead of taking offence at Trump’s harsh comments, Nigeria should address the issues that gave room for such criticism.
According to him, it remains a national shame that terrorists still operate freely while innocent citizens are killed and soldiers lose their lives in the fight.
He wrote: “Trump threatens war on the terror group in Nigeria, and while everyone is making noise, let’s ask the real question: do we want the terror group gone or not?
“If yes, and for years as a sovereign nation we haven’t been able to end this, then any genuine aid or assistance to fight terrorism should be a welcome development. Let’s not act like these things aren’t real, many attacks happen in Christian-dominated areas, but this should never be about religion. This is a crime against humanity.
“The Nigerian government should be in direct talks with not just the U.S., but the U.N. and our neighboring countries, to find coordinated ways to end this madness once and for all. Because truth is, when Trump calls Nigeria a “disgrace of a nation,” we can get offended… or we can fix what gave him the confidence to say that.
“It’s a national disgrace that terrorists move freely while innocent lives are lost. Our soldiers fight and die in the forests, yet a few keep benefitting from the existence of insecurity.”
