President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially received Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, into the All Progressives Congress (APC), hailing his defection as a “symbol of unity and progress.”
The formal reception took place on Monday in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, with Vice President, Kashim Shettima representing the President.
Speaking at the event, President Tinubu lauded Diri’s leadership qualities and commitment to development, saying the governor’s decision to join the ruling party reflected a shared vision for national progress.
He said, “The All Progressives Congress is a party of those who believe that progress can only be guaranteed when we stand together.
“Governor Douye Diri, your story mirrors that of your people. Politics is about development, not noise or opposition. We are mightily proud of you. You have made the right decision.”
He described Diri’s move as a bold demonstration of maturity and patriotism, adding that Nigeria’s unity must always take precedence over partisan rivalry.
The President praised Governor Diri for his calm but effective leadership, highlighting his achievements in infrastructure and peacebuilding across Bayelsa State.
Tinubu said, “You have led with calm dignity, yet with deep commitment to development and peace.
“You have expanded roads to remote communities, built bridges where there were barriers, and brought light where there was darkness. This is what it means to govern with empathy.”
He commended the governor for prioritising people-oriented projects and for maintaining stability in a state often characterised by political tension.
President Tinubu described Diri’s entry into the APC as “a homecoming”, saying the party remains open to all leaders committed to Nigeria’s development and democracy.
He added, “You are now part of a family that thinks and acts together. We welcome you and will support you as the champion you have always been.”
